Privacy Policy
1. Commitment to Openness & Privacy
YearMaps is an open, educational planetary historical atlas. We respect user privacy. We do not sell, rent, or monetize your personal identifying information to third parties.
2. Analytics and Cookies
Browsing the atlas requires no account. To learn which pages are useful, we use Google Analytics 4 with its advertising features switched off. Whether it runs depends on where you are browsing from, which we read from the country our network (Cloudflare) reports for your connection:
- In the European Union and European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Brazil, Turkey, South Korea, China and Canada, or if your country cannot be determined, Google Analytics runs only if you accept it in the cookie banner. Until you do, its script is not loaded and no analytics cookies are set.
- Everywhere else, Google Analytics runs by default, unless your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, in which case it does not run.
When it runs, Google Analytics records the pages you view, how you arrived, your approximate location (country or city, derived from your IP address), and your device, browser and screen size. Google processes this data on our behalf; see Google's privacy policy. Wherever you are, you can switch it off or on at any time with , also in the footer. Choosing "Necessary only" stops Google Analytics and deletes its cookies.
Separately, and for every visitor, we count how many people view each page, in two cookie-free ways. After you first scroll, tap or move the mouse, the page sends one anonymous signal containing only the page address and, on the first page of a visit, the name of the site that linked to you. Our server adds it to a daily total by page, country and device type. We also use Cloudflare Web Analytics, which measures page views and loading speed. Neither sets a cookie, stores anything in your browser, or keeps your IP address or an identifier, so a visit cannot be linked to you or to your other visits.
Your browser's local storage keeps two preferences on your own device: your light or dark theme, and your cookie choice. Map calculations and timeline filters run locally in your browser.
3. Edge Network Telemetry
Our site is delivered globally via the Cloudflare Edge Network. Standard anonymous server access logs (IP address, browser user-agent, requested page) are maintained temporarily solely for DDoS defense, caching, and technical reliability.
4. Feedback and Contact
If you send us a message through the feedback form, we receive what you typed and, if you give it, your email address so we can reply. We use it only to answer you and improve the site. For any privacy question or a request to delete a message you sent, write to support@yearmaps.com.
