Terms of Use

YearMaps is a free world atlas for any year. These terms explain what you may do with its maps and text, where they come from, and how far you can rely on them. By using the site you accept them.

1. Using the atlas

YearMaps is free to use, with no account. Students, teachers and researchers are welcome to use screenshots of the maps and quotations from the pages in lessons, lectures, assignments and papers, with a credit to YearMaps and a link to the page.

2. Open data and licences

The maps and facts are built from open datasets, and each keeps its own licence. The data sources page lists every one, with what it supplies and how to credit it. Introductory text marked as adapted from Wikipedia is under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0: if you reuse it, credit the article and share your version under the same licence. Photographs come from Wikimedia Commons, and each one's author and licence are on its file page.

3. Accuracy

Historical borders are reconstructions. Before modern surveys, frontiers were often zones rather than lines, and sources disagree, so a border shown for a given year is an approximation. Figures such as lengths, heights and populations come from the datasets named on each page and may differ from other sources. The methodology page explains the known limits. Do not rely on the atlas for navigation, legal or safety decisions.

4. Borders and names

Past and present borders, place names and territories are shown as the underlying sources record them. They imply no position on any current territorial dispute or claim.

5. Privacy, analytics and links

How the site measures visits, and the choices you have, are set out in the privacy policy. Pages link to other websites, such as Wikipedia and the data providers, which have their own terms.

6. Changes

These terms may be updated as the site grows. The version on this page is the one that applies.

7. Contact

Questions about these terms can be sent to support@yearmaps.com or through the contact page.
